Apple added a built-in Dual Capture mode with the iPhone 17 lineup, but it records in one fixed layout and no earlier iPhone gets it. If you have an older iPhone, or you want control over how the two views sit together, that gap is what Dual Camera fills.

Can an iPhone record with the front and back camera at the same time?

Yes. Every iPhone from the iPhone XR onwards has the hardware for simultaneous multi-camera capture. Apple only exposed it in the built-in Camera app on the iPhone 17, so on earlier models you need an app like Dual Camera. Full walkthrough here.

Which iPhones does Dual Camera work on?

iPhone XR and later, plus iPad Pro models from 2020 onwards, running iOS 18.6 or later. See the full compatibility table.

Do I need an iPhone 17 to record both cameras?

No. The iPhone 17 added Apple's own Dual Capture mode, but Dual Camera does the same thing on much older hardware, and gives you layouts Apple's version does not offer.

Does Dual Camera record in 4K?

Yes. Dual Camera captures at up to 4K Ultra HD, so footage holds up on YouTube and on large screens, not just in a phone-sized feed.

What are frames, and how are they different from modes?

A mode decides where the two views sit: picture-in-picture, split, side by side. A frame decides how the front view is cut and treated: a heart, a star, a Polaroid border, a diagonal split. There are 17 frames across four groups, and the one you pick is rendered into the video as you record. See all 17.

Can I record dual camera in landscape?

Yes. Every layout works in portrait and in landscape. Rotate the phone and the two views re-frame with it, so you can shoot 9:16 for Reels or wide for YouTube without cropping afterwards.

Is the result one video file or two?

One. The layout you pick is composited live while you record, so the moment you stop you have a single finished clip in your library: no editing step, no syncing two files.

Can I take dual camera photos as well as video?

Yes. Photo mode captures both lenses as a single still using the same layouts as video.

Is Dual Camera free?

The app is free to download and try. An optional unlock is available as a monthly or yearly subscription, or as a one-time lifetime purchase if you would rather not subscribe.
